English Translation
The Gray Fin
The sun is shining in the blue summer sky. The water of the sea sparkles in the morning heat and is pleasantly warm. Julian is sitting on his surfboard, letting his legs hang relaxed into the cool water. He is patiently waiting for a good wave. The coast with its colorful parasols is far away and can only be seen as a narrow strip. It is wonderfully quiet out here on the open ocean. He closes his eyes for a moment, listens to the quiet sound of the sea, and enjoys the perfect moment.
Suddenly, the mood in the water changes. An eerie silence settles over the scene. Then a gray fin slowly and quietly breaks through the surface. It is huge and moves purposefully forward. Julian stares transfixed at the water. His blood freezes in his veins and his throat tightens. The dark animal has surfaced right next to his board. His heart is pounding wildly and loudly in his chest, as if it might burst at any second.
The fin draws a slow circle around the surfboard. A massive, dark shadow glides past beneath the water’s surface, showing the enormous size of the sea creature. Julian is barely breathing and dares not move even a millimeter. He grips the edges of his board frantically. Every wrong movement could be the last. The tension in the air is almost unbearably heavy.
Finally, the fin slowly dives down again. The water bubbles briefly at the spot and leaves behind small ripples. Julian doesn’t waste a second. He throws himself flat onto the board and paddles toward the beach with absolute all his might. His arms burn with exertion, but he must not stop now. After a seemingly endless minute, he reaches the shallow water, throws himself breathlessly onto the warm, safe sand, and looks back at the wide, blue sea. He made it.
