English Translation
The Ghost Ship
It is a foggy evening on the North Sea. Tom stands on the beach and looks out at the dark water. The wind blows cold, and thick fog lies over the sea. No one is outside, just Tom and the sound of the waves.
Suddenly, he sees something in the fog. An old, large sailing ship is moving slowly toward the coast. The sails are torn, and the wood of the ship looks old and black. Not a single light is burning on the entire ship. No people are to be seen on deck.
Tom doesn’t believe his eyes. A ship of this type normally no longer sails in these modern waters. It looks like a ship from another time – a real ghost ship.
The ship comes closer and closer, but stops just before the shallow water. Suddenly, Tom hears a soft sound, like the calling of voices in the windy fog. A cold gust of wind blows across the beach, and a strange scent of salt and old wood is in the air.
Tom gets goosebumps. He wants to walk away, but his legs won’t move. He stares, spellbound, at the dark ship.
After a few minutes, something strange happens. The fog becomes thicker, and the ship begins to blur. It slowly dissolves into the gray air as if it had never been there.
Tom stands alone in the dark for a long time. He doesn’t know if he dreamed it or if the ship was really there. But he will never forget this evening.
