The Secret of the Old Cabin

Thomas stood at the edge of the dark forest and breathed in the fresh mountain air. In front of him lay a narrow, moss-covered path that led steeply upward. In his backpack, he had only an old paper map, a flashlight, and a bottle of water. Today he wanted to solve the mystery that the villagers often whispered about: the abandoned hunter’s cabin at the Blue Lake.

For three weeks, Thomas had been living in a small village in the mountains. He practiced German every day and often spoke with the neighbors to improve his listening and speaking skills. Yesterday, an old man in the bakery had said, “Don’t go there. The path is difficult, and the weather changes quickly.” But Thomas loved adventure. He wanted to see it for himself.

The climb took almost two hours. The path was full of stones and wet leaves. Sometimes the only thing you could hear was the rustling of the wind in the tall fir trees. The sun slowly hid behind dense, gray clouds. Thomas noticed that the old man had been right. A cold wind blew through the forest, and the first raindrops fell on his jacket.

Suddenly, he saw a small, crooked roof between the trees. It was the cabin! The wooden windows were dark, and the door was open a crack. With a pounding heart, Thomas walked closer. He carefully pushed the old wooden door open. It made a loud creaking sound that echoed through the quiet room.

Inside, it smelled of old wood and damp earth. A heavy, leather-bound book lay on a dusty wooden table. Thomas turned on his flashlight and stepped closer. He opened the book. It wasn’t a diary, but a hand-drawn map of the surrounding mountains from the year 1924. Next to the map lay a silver compass.

Suddenly, he heard a noise outside. Cracking branches. Was someone stepping onto the path? Thomas looked out the small window, but he only saw the fog getting denser. He took a deep breath, put the compass and the old book safely into his backpack. He knew it was time for the journey back. The adventure had only just begun, and he could hardly wait to talk to his neighbors about it tomorrow.
