Niemand wohnte dort.

„Was habt ihr gefunden?“, fragte Mia.

Sie gingen vom See weg.

„Warte, Ben!“, rief Mia. Aber der Hund blieb nicht stehen.

Hinter der Brücke gab es zwei Wege. Ben nahm den linken Weg. Dann war er hinter den Bäumen weg.

Mia wollte ihm folgen.

„Ja. Eine Geschichte für die nächste Person.“

The House Across the Lake 2

Mia saw the little yellow house from her bedroom window. It stood across the lake, between two tall trees. Nobody lived there, but someone opened its door every summer.

One Saturday, she asked her grandfather about the house.

“Your grandmother and I went there many years ago,” he said.

“What did you find?”

Grandfather smiled and put an old key on the table.

“Take your brother tomorrow. You can find out together.”

The next morning, Mia put sandwiches and water in her bag. Her older brother, Leo, checked the weather on his phone. It was a good day for a long walk.

They could follow the lake path to the yellow house. Grandfather said the walk would take about two hours.

“Come home before dinner,” he told them at the door.

“And call me when you get to the house.”

The first part of the walk was warm and easy. Small birds moved between the trees beside the water. Leo stopped to take pictures of three little ducks.

After an hour, they reached a bridge over a stream. A large tree lay across the middle of the bridge.

“We can’t get past that,” Mia said, looking at Leo.

Leo checked the map that Grandfather gave them that morning. There was another bridge further up the stream.

“It makes our walk longer, but we can cross there.”

They left the lake and followed a narrow, muddy path. Soon, the trees were so close that the water disappeared.

Mia heard something move in the leaves behind them.

She stopped, and Leo turned around to look.

A small brown dog stood in the middle of the path. It had wet feet and a bright red collar.

“Hello! Where did you come from?” Mia asked softly.

The dog walked closer and sat down beside her shoes.

Leo read the name and phone number on its collar.

“His name is Ben. Let’s call his owner.”

But neither phone worked under the tall, thick trees.

“We’ll try again near the lake,” Leo told his sister.

Ben followed them as they continued along the muddy path. At the second bridge, he suddenly ran ahead of them.

“Wait, Ben!” Mia called, but the dog did not stop.

Across the bridge, the path went in two different directions. Ben took the left path and disappeared behind some trees.

Mia wanted to follow, but Leo opened the map again.

“The left path goes back towards the lake,” he said.

“And there’s a building here. Maybe it’s someone’s home.”

A few minutes later, they heard a man calling.

“Ben! Ben! Where are you?”

The dog ran out from behind a tree beside them. Then he hurried towards an old man in a garden.

“Oh, there you are!” the man said, holding his dog.

“We found him near the broken bridge,” Mia explained.

The man thanked them and brought Ben inside his house. Then he returned with two apples and a friendly smile.

“Where are you two going on this beautiful day?”

Mia pointed across the water towards the little yellow house.

“Ah,” he said. “Then you have something lovely to find.”

He showed them a short path back to the lake. Soon, they stood outside the house between the tall trees.

Mia called Grandfather, then took his key from her bag.

The door opened with a loud sound, and they entered.

Inside, there were books, chairs, and a large wooden table. Drawings covered the walls, from the floor to the windows.

“It’s a little library!” Leo said, walking towards the books.

On the table lay a thick book with a blue cover. Mia opened it and saw her grandmother’s name inside.

Under the name were the words “The House Across the Lake.”

Mia read the first page slowly.

“We found this empty house during our first summer here. Now it is a place for everyone to share stories. Write about your visit, or draw something you saw.”

There were pictures of birds, boats, trees, and smiling families. Some pages were old, but others looked quite new.

Mia found an empty page and picked up a pencil.

She wrote about the tree, the second bridge, and Ben. Leo added a picture of the dog with muddy feet.

Then they ate their sandwiches outside beside the quiet lake.

“What did you find?” Grandfather asked when they came home.

“A library, your old pictures, and a lost dog,” Mia said.

“And did you leave anything there?”

Mia smiled.

“Yes. A story for the next person who opens the door.”
