Er kommt zu einer Brücke aus Holz. Zwei große Hunde sind auf der Brücke! Sie sehen böse aus. Marcus schlägt mit einem Holzstock auf einen Stein. BUMM! Das laute Geräusch macht den Hunden Angst. Sie laufen weg.
Bald sieht Marcus das große Fort aus Stein. Er läuft zum Tor.
„Halt!“, sagt eine Wache.
„Ich muss Lucius sehen!“, sagt Marcus.
Die Wache bringt Marcus nach drinnen. Lucius sitzt an einem Tisch. Er sieht traurig und besorgt aus. Er sucht in seiner leeren Tasche.
„Lucius!“, sagt Marcus. Er gibt dem Soldaten das kleine Buch.
Lucius ist sehr glücklich! „Mein Buch! Meine Karten!“, sagt er. „Du bist sehr mutig, Marcus.“
Lucius gibt Marcus eine Silbermünze und gutes Essen. Marcus isst am warmen Feuer. Er schläft im Fort. Er ist glücklich.
Am nächsten Morgen möchte Marcus nach Hause gehen.
„Stopp!“, sagt Lucius. Er lacht heute nicht. „Du kannst nicht nach Hause gehen. Du bist stark. Du bist jetzt in der römischen Armee.“

Marcus and the Secret Book
In the year 120 AD, Marcus lives in a small village. He is 18 years old. Marcus works with his father. His father is a blacksmith. He makes tools for horses and farms. Marcus likes his father, but he wants an adventure. He wants to see the big world.
One sunny day, a Roman soldier comes to the shop. His horse is tired. The horse needs a new shoe. The soldier’s name is Lucius.
“I need help,” Lucius says. “I have a message for the army.”
Marcus gives the soldier some water. Lucius drinks the water. But a small book falls from his bag! The book falls into the dirt. Nobody sees it.
The father fixes the horse. Lucius gives the father coins and rides away.
Marcus looks at the ground. He sees the small book. It has brown leather on it. Marcus opens it. Inside, there are maps and drawings!
“Father!” Marcus says. “The soldier dropped his book!”

His father nods. “Take your coat and some bread. Be careful!”
Marcus puts the book in his coat. He runs into the big forest. The forest is dark. Marcus hears birds and the wind. He is afraid, but he keeps running.
He comes to a wooden bridge. Two big dogs are on the bridge! They look angry. Marcus hits a rock with a wooden stick. BANG! The loud noise scares the dogs. They run away.
Soon, Marcus sees the big stone fort. He runs to the gate.
“Halt!” a guard says.
“I must see Lucius!” Marcus says.
The guard takes Marcus inside. Lucius is sitting at a table. He looks sad and worried. He looks in his empty bag.
“Lucius!” Marcus says. He gives the small book to the soldier.
Lucius is very happy! “My book! My maps!” he says. “You are very brave, Marcus.”
Lucius gives Marcus a silver coin and good food. Marcus eats by the warm fire. He sleeps at the fort. He is happy.
The next morning, Marcus wants to go home.
“Stop!” Lucius says. He does not smile today. “You cannot go home. You are strong. You are in the Roman army now.”
Marcus is shocked. He cannot leave. He cannot see his father again.
Marcus tried to help, but now his normal life is finished.
