Jetset-Mücken

Jetset-Mücken
Audio of the German short story “Jetset-Mücken” created by Shawn Frandsen

Markus sieht ihn an. Thomas ist ganz weiß im Gesicht.

„Du siehst schlecht aus, Thomas“, sagt Markus. „Hast du Fieber?“

Thomas nickt.

Jet setting mosquitoes

It is late at night at the big airport in Berlin. The room is very quiet. Only a few people are waiting to fly.

Two men work together. Their names are Thomas and Markus. They move bags. Thomas is tired. He drinks a cup of coffee.

“I am very cold,” Thomas says. He shakes. Markus looks at him. Thomas has a white face.

“You look bad, Thomas,” Markus says. “Do you have a fever?”

Thomas nods. “Yes, my head hurts.”

Then Thomas falls down on the floor. Markus is very scared. He shouts for help.

An airport doctor and a helper come fast. They look at Thomas on the floor.

“He is very hot and sick,” the doctor says. “We must go to the hospital now.”

The next day, many people at the airport are talking about it. A doctor asks Markus questions.

“Do you know why he is sick?” she asks.

Markus shakes his head. “No. We only work here.”

In the hospital, Thomas wakes up. A doctor talks to him.

“Mr. Weber, you are sick with malaria,” the doctor says. “Have you traveled to other countries?”

Thomas says no. “I have not left Germany. This is not possible!”

The doctors do not understand. How can a man in Berlin get malaria?

Two days later, another worker remembers something.

“Last week, a big plane came from Africa,” he says. “The plane had a box of plants.”

The experts go to look inside the old box. In the box, they find some mosquitoes.

Now they know. Mosquitoes infected with Malaria made their way to Berlin and bit Thomas.

Thomas will survive. He gets better in the hospital.

“Time to get a new job,” Thomas exclaims
