English Translation
The Secret at the Baggage Claim
It is late at night at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport. The hall is very quiet. Only a few passengers are waiting for their flights.
Two men are working together at the large luggage belt. Their names are Thomas and Markus. Thomas is tired and drinks a cup of coffee.
“I suddenly feel very cold,” Thomas says and trembles slightly. Markus looks at his colleague and sees a pale face.
“You don’t look well at all, Thomas,” Markus replies with concern. “Do you perhaps have a fever?”
Thomas nods slowly. “Yes, my head hurts and I have chills.”
Suddenly everything goes black before Thomas’s eyes. He collapses onto the floor. Markus gets terribly frightened and immediately shouts loudly for help.
After a few minutes, the airport doctor arrives with a paramedic. They examine the sick man on the floor.
“He has a high fever and is sweating heavily,” the doctor says seriously. “We must take him to the nearest hospital immediately.”
The next day there is great excitement throughout the airport. A team from the health department comes to Berlin. The experts examine the workplace and question Markus.
“Do you have any idea where this illness comes from?” asks a female doctor. Markus shakes his head. “No, we only work here in the building.”
In the hospital, Thomas slowly wakes up again. A doctor stands by his bed and asks him many important questions.
“Mr. Weber, you have malaria,” the doctor says calmly. “But you weren’t abroad at all in the last few months.”
Thomas is very surprised and doesn’t understand the world anymore. “Malaria? That’s impossible. I was only here in Germany.”
The doctors puzzle over this big medical mystery. How can a man in Berlin get malaria?
After two days there is finally a new clue in the case. An experienced colleague remembers a special detail.
“A week ago, a large cargo plane arrived from Central Africa,” the colleague tells the team. “In the plane was a box of exotic plants.”
The experts examine the old box in the storage room very closely. Inside, they find a small, living mosquito.
The mystery is finally solved. The little mosquito flew out of the box back then and stung Thomas in the dark warehouse.
Thomas is slowly recovering from the severe illness in the hospital. The doctors give him the right medications against the fever.
“Next time I will pay closer attention,” Thomas thinks and smiles weakly.
