English Translation

The Blue Light in the Red Sand

Max lives in the year 2150. He lives in a large station on Mars. The station is called Nova Alpha. Outside, it is very cold and there are no trees. The sky is often red and the sun looks very small. Max works as a technician. Every day, he repairs machines that make air and water for the people.

Today Max has the day off. He sits at the large window of his room and drinks hot tea. Suddenly, he sees a strange light outside in the desert. The light is blue and moves very quickly. Max is surprised. Nobody is outside at this time.

He quickly puts on his spacesuit. The suit is heavy, but it keeps him warm and gives him air to breathe. Max opens the airlock and steps outside into the red sand. His boots make quiet sounds on the ground. He follows the blue light.

The light flies slowly between large rocks. Max follows behind. After ten minutes, he comes to a small cave. The blue light shines brightly out of the cave. Max is a little scared, but he is also very curious. He goes inside carefully.

It is dark in the cave, but the blue light shows the way. Suddenly, Max sees a plant. The plant is wonderful and glows in all the colors of the rainbow. It grows in the hard stone, without soil and without water. Max is amazed. There are normally no plants on Mars.

The plant begins to speak. It does not make normal words, but Max understands them in his head. The plant says: “Hello, Max. It’s nice that you are coming.”

Max can hardly believe what he hears. He answers quietly: “Hello? Who are you? Are you from here?”

The plant smiles – or at least that’s how it looks to Max. It says: “I am an extremophile. I love extreme conditions. I have been living here in the ice and stone for a very long time. I was already on Mars before humans came.”

Max forgets the cold and the tiredness. He forgets the work at the station. He looks at the plant and thinks: This is the most important discovery in the history of humanity.

“Can I come back?”, Max asks with a smile.

The plant nods. “Of course, Max. I am always here.”

Max goes back happily to the station. In his head, he has a wonderful secret. Tomorrow he will continue working as a technician, but now he knows that the red planet is full of wonders.
