The Mystery in the Kitchen

It is a completely normal Tuesday morning. Anna is standing in the kitchen waiting for her coffee to finish brewing. The morning sun is shining through the large window and illuminating the old wooden table. The birds are singing outside on the balcony, and the world feels peaceful and ordinary. Suddenly, Anna stops dead in her tracks. She doesn’t believe her eyes and holds her breath.

On the table, right next to her coffee cup, lies a new, shiny 100-euro bill.

Anna looks puzzled at the ceiling, then at the front door, and finally down the hallway. Everything in the apartment is quiet. Last night, before she went to sleep, the table was completely empty. No one was in the apartment during the night. She lives all alone on the third floor of a quiet building, and both the front door and all the windows were tightly locked. There is absolutely no logical reason why money should be lying there.

She walks slowly closer and carefully takes the paper in her hand. It feels real and very valuable. Is this perhaps a gift from a secret admirer? Or maybe a silly joke from a friend? She wonders if a neighbor made a mistake and threw the money through the wrong door. But how would a neighbor get into her locked apartment without her hearing anything?

All day long at work, Anna has to think about the mysterious bill. She sits at her computer in the office, but cannot concentrate on her tasks at all. Her thoughts constantly revolve around the green paper on her kitchen table. In the afternoon, she even calls her best friend briefly, but doesn’t tell her the whole truth so as not to seem silly. She just asks casually if money has ever appeared in her apartment. The friend just laughs and says no.

In the evening Anna comes home, unlocks the door, and immediately goes into the kitchen with a pounding heart. The 100-euro bill is still lying in the exact same spot. No one has taken it, no one has left a note, and there is no clue as to how it got there. The mail in the hallway is normal, and the lock shows no signs of a break-in.

Anna puts her bag down, sits at the table, and examines the bill very closely with a magnifying glass. It looks completely real. She smiles quietly to herself. Perhaps it is a small miracle from the universe. Or the exciting beginning of a great, unknown adventure. She decides to keep the money in a small bowl in the living room for now and wait to see what happens the next morning.
